Cultural Eco-Footprint

Current pro-environmental behaviour discourse tends to over-emphasise personal responsibility and actions, compared with community, political and structural level changes. This project addresses this through facilitating people making their own personal pledges around specific, realistic social-scale actions to address climate and environmental issues. Volunteers undertook a series of guided conversations with participants at the Sustainable Living Festival to engage them with various potential social and community actions, through the concept of expanding one’s ‘cultural footprint’, (in contrast with personal actions, which are designed to reduce one’s ‘ecological footprint’). Hundreds of participants contributed pledges over three days, of which they kept a physical carbon copy as a reminder for fulfilling their pledge.
