Maribyrnong Environmental Leaders was an innovative sustainability program designed to educate youth from refugee and recently arrived backgrounds on sustainable living, waste and consumption. Participants learnt about waste and consumption issues, along with video production during workshops in August- September, followed by 6 weeks of planning, researching, filming and editing a short film during September and October. Participants worked in two groups, who were supported by youth mentors. Group 1 focused on preventing food waste and Group 2 focused on sharing stories of two inspiring individuals who are attempting to live more sustainably through their day to day choices. The videos were screened at the Phoenix Youth Centre and engaged local communities regarding the impacts of waste on our environment.
